At the iBi Foundation, we are committed to removing plastic from the ocean around Ibiza and the Balearic Islands. This desperately needs to be done, since there is a lot of plastic floating around there. We use the donations we receive for our own project catamaran iBi and supporting other organisations who are activly involved to keep the beaches clean. By doing this, we create a nice place for ourselves, but especially for all the animals that call the ocean their home. Together we will fight for an ocean that is free of plastic.

Plastic not only harms the well-being of marine animals. We also find traces of microplastics in the air, in our drinking water, in our food and in cosmetics that we use every day. Much research is still needed into the precise health risks, but the first results are simply alarming. That's why we have to do something about it now!

Marine life suffers enormously from the plastic in our oceans. The marine animals get entangled in nets or packaging and consume the microplastics in the ocean. These then end up in their stomach. Did you know that 52% of the sea turtles in our oceans already have microplastics in their stomach? After eating just 1 piece of plastic, a sea turtle has a 22% chance of dying. A terrible development and a serious threat to the sea turtle’s life.

Worldwide there are approximately 5 ocean garbage patches. The exact amount of plastic in the Pacific is unknown, but is estimated to cover an area as big as 700,000 km2 to more than 15 million km2. The expectation is that the amount of plastic in our oceans will only increase in the coming years. Fortunately, there are various initiatives that try to do something about this. With your help, we can keep our oceans and beaches clean. It’s the only way to safe the marine animals that live there.

Plastic pollution is the biggest threat to our oceans. But how does the plastic end up in our oceans? Plastic ends up our oceans in many different ways. The floating plastic garbage patches in our oceans are not only caused by dumping waste at sea. The plastic also ends up in our oceans due to litter and our clothing. Did you know, for example, that about 30% of the plastic in our oceans are microplastics from our clothing? Microplastics end up in the water every time you wash your clothes.
